With more than 30 years of surgical experience, Dr. James B. Williams is considered a pioneer in endovascular surgery in Central Illinois. Nationally recognized as an innovator, he has given numerous national and international presentations and has provided training and proctoring for other physicians.
Dr. Williams earned his medical degree from Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, TX. He completed his surgical residency at the University of Alabama Hospital/Clinics in Birmingham, AL, and his cardiothoracic surgical residency at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania and Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia.
In January 2000, Dr. Williams partnered with Dr. Edward Diethrich, founder of the Arizona Heart Institute, in performing the first endoluminal graft procedure at Methodist Medical Center of Illinois. Since then, Dr. Williams has performed more than 650 such procedures at area hospitals.
Prior to coming to Peoria in 1999, Dr. Williams was responsible for establishing the Cardiac Surgery Program at Jefferson Memorial community hospital of St. Louis, MO, at Abilene Regional Medical Center in Texas, and at Holy Name of Jesus Hospital in Gadsden, AL. Dr. Williams is board-certified in three surgical specialties – cardiothoracic, vascular, and general.
He is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and member of the International Society of Endovascular Specialists. In addition, Dr. Williams is a member of several national and international professional associations and has authored articles and publications. Currently, he is principal investigator in six clinical trials for aortic endografting.
Dr. Williams is particularly proud of the previous fellowship training he developed for surgeons from around the country. The first visiting Fellow began in December of 2005, with the last Fellow completing their training in June of 2013. During that time, 24 different surgeons completed the fellowship program which was known as Endovascular Therapies Fellowship Training, LTD, NFP. All successfully credentialed at their home institutions and would tell you their professional lives have been enhanced.
Dr. Williams’s philosophy of medicine is simple – treat the patient as if he or she is family. Treating about 1,000 people a year, Dr. Williams has made a positive impact with his patients, his community and his profession.
